About ourSTEMstory:
The journey to modern science hasn't always been accompanied by ethical research practices. In fact, a substantial amount of progress in science occurred as a result of unethical and inhumane experiments on the basis of eugenics. Eugenics is the belief that selective breeding will improve racial quality in future generations. This immoral scientific theory is one of the many that provided justification for conducting inhumane and unethical experiments on people. OurStemStory's goal is to host seminars featuring keynote speakers that educate the public on the importance of research ethics as well as current and future scientists, engineers, and mathematicians. As part of Auburn University's Office of Inclusion & Diversity, OurSTEMstory aims to engage the STEM community in discussions of past and present research ethics violations. The name "OurSTEMstory" is an adaptation of the famed "#HERstory" campaign launched by Empower Women in collaboration with Global Champions for Women’s Economic Empowerment that was designed to highlight the contributions of women to the advancement of humanity. Similarly, "OurSTEMstory," is also designed to raise awareness about the contributions of underrepresented groups in STEM. |
